About Me

Michelle has been teaching privately and in schools for 17 years. Originally from California, she moved to London to train at the Royal Academy of Music and later at the Royal Northern College of Music. Her extensive studies at music conservatoire and international masterclasses gave her the opportunity to learn from world-renown cellists and pedagogues many of whom made their mark on how she plays and teaches.

She is a caring and professional teacher who is highly accountable towards her students' progress and well-being. Her students have all achieved success in ABRSM exams, furthermore she has undertaken training to be an Examiner. Her teaching draws on an extensive background of multi-disciplinary practices across the arts and health.

Michelle plays as a freelancer with major UK orchestras including the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House and was previously on trial for the Sub-Principal Cello position with Royal Scottish National Orchestra, with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and with Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Abroad, she has performed with the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra. She has also performed and toured in bands, recording sessions, and musical theatre.

Michelle holds a certificate for enhanced DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service) check for working with children. She is a member of the professional body, the Incorporated Society of Musicians. She lives in Bermondsey with her husband, listens to a lot of music when not playing (not only classical), and in her spare times likes to gather and cook, swim, practices pilates, reads and seeks inspiration from everywhere!

You can find her First Tutors profile here, where you can read student reviews.

Testimonials:

“Michelle is a wonderful musician and an inspirational teacher! She takes a holistic approach and is very patient and encouraging. She also knows exactly when and how to provide more challenge and spur me on. As an older adult beginner, I’m amazed at how much progress I’ve made in the 18 months I’ve been her student.” - David C.

“Michelle is a wonderful cello teacher. An amazing cellist who knows how to inspire her pupils, giving them a sense of enjoyment in music and in the instrument. Our 9 year old daughter has come on so much since she’s had Michelle as a teacher and her technique has improved enormously. What’s more, our daughter now loves to play the cello!” - Gerard and Ee Tuan
